Today he is perhaps best known for his work in the cataloguing of Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s compositions, most notably the preparation of the monumental\u00a0<em>Thematic Catalogue (1960, 2nd edition 1996)<\/em>. Like many composers,\u00a0<strong>Dvo\u0159\u00e1k<\/strong>\u00a0gave his works opus numbers, but in his case these can be an unreliable guide to the date of composition. Due to the composer\u2019s complicated relationship with his publisher, early works were sometimes given late opus numbers and vice versa. Burghauser paid great attention to this aspect of cataloguing and that is why in many modern catalogues of Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s works you will find that each composition is allocated a B(urghauser) number. For example the wonderful D minor Wind Serenade is Op 44 (B 77). That is the method\u00a0<strong>Peter Herbert<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<em>The Dvo\u0159\u00e1k Society<\/em>\u00a0used in preparing our own publication\u00a0<em>Anton\u00edn Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2009\u2013\u2009Complete Catalogue of Works<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"dvorak_complete_catalogue_works.html\"><em>\u2026\u00a0more<\/em>\u00a0&gt;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Burghauser found time to write two short biographies of Dvo\u0159\u00e1k, in 1966 and 1985. Both were intended for a broader musical public than his more specialised publications.
