Born in Moravia and trained at the Brno Conservatoire he arrived in the United Kingdom in 1940 with the Free Czechoslovak Army. After WWII he became a naturalised British citizen and was well known as an opera conductor at Sadler\u2019s Wells and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden.
