The article reproduces an interview the author had with Fonda about the circumstances of the recording in February 1966. An introduction sets the scene with the Habsburg oppression of the war years, and among the subsequent themes discussed are the \u2018Dvo\u0159\u00e1k battle\u2019 and the roles played by a host of composers, including Josef Suk, V\u00edt\u0115zslav Nov\u00e1k, Oskar Nedbal, Ervin Schulhoff and Leo\u0161 Jan\u00e1\u010dek. The post-war Czechoslovak Festival in London is covered in detail, and the spotlight is shone on Ema Destinnov\u00e1 and her colourful life during and after the conflict. Hopkins<br><em>Journal of Czech and Slovak Music 27<\/em> (2018), pp101\u2013114<br>The title of this article refers to the years between the First and Second World Wars, a period in people\u2019s perception of Czech music and composers which was often represented exclusively by Bohuslav Martin\u016f and to a lesser extent by the \u2018Terezin four\u2019 and Ervin Schulhoff.
