<description>
We regret to announce the death of our President Sir Charles Mackerras. Sir Charles died on July 14 aged 84. As a noted conductor and musicologist, he contributed much to the wider appreciation of Czech and Slovak music and will be remembered in particular for championing Leos Janáček and introducing the passionate and heartfelt music of the Czech composer to British audiences. A full obituary will be included in the October edition of the Society's newsletter.
