SOME PLACES STILL AVAILABLE: Martinů and his Pupils – Study weekend at Burton Manor in conjunction with the Dvořák Society (September 2009)

Burton Manor

Dvořák Society member, Graham Melville-Mason, is the tutor at a study weekend to be held at Burton Manor in the North West of England from the evening of Friday 4 to Sunday 6 September 2009.

It is not necessary to be a Dvořák Society member to attend. Accommodation is available or students can choose to attend on a non-residential basis if they wish.

Content of Course

The title of the course is: Martinů and his Pupils. 2009 sees the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Bohuslav Martinů, the youngest of the internationally known quartet of great Czech composers—Smetana, Dvořák, Janáček and Martinů. Studying in Paris from 1923 and then exiled abroad due to Nazi and then Communist persecution, he never lost his yearning for home, which remained reflected in his music. His works have been well received by British audiences, if not always by the critics.

Through a series of illustrated lectures and discussion, students will gain an an overview of the life and work of Bohuslav Martinů. The period studied will encompass Martinů’s time in Polička, Prague, Paris, New York, Nice and Switzerland. The course will also consider the music of his two most important Czech pupils, Vítězslava Kaprálová and Jan Novák.

No previous knowledge is required, just an interest in the music.
