Korngold’s opera Die Tote Stadt to be performed in Berlin and Vienna in the same month (February 2006), plus news of Korngold Centre in Brno
First posted January 3 2006
Erich Wolfgang Korngold (b. Brno 1897, d. Hollywood 1957) tried unsuccessfully to re-establish himself as a musical force in Europe after the Second World War, but the contemporary reaction against late romanticism was too strong. It is only now—after the posthumous triumph of Mahler and the rehabilitation of other late romantics such as Richard Strauss and Zemlinsky—that Korngold’s works are again being judged on their merits (by audiences, if not always by critics).
In the Czech Republic there is now a Korngold Centre in Brno (part of the Moravian Museum). It opened in December 2004, with a ceremony attended by guests from the United States, England, Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic.
