Jiří Bělohlávek appointed Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra

     Master musician and Dvořák Society Vice-President Jiří Bělohlávek has been appointed Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He takes up the position officially at the First Night of the Proms in 2006 and will be Chief Conductor Designate until then.

Memorial Concert for Vilém Tauský

     We are pleased to give more details of the Memorial Concert for Vilém Tauský to be held on Saturday, 12th March 2005 at 7:30pm. The venue is the United Reformed Church Hall in Widmore Road, Bromley, south London. The hall holds 350 people. Next door there is a multi-storey car park and the hall is fairly near to both Bromley South and Bromley North rail stations.

The concert, arranged by Brenda Rayson, presents a mixed programme of music: vocal, instrumental and choral and reflecting Vilém Tauský’s special interests. The programme will include music by Smetana, Dvořák, Janáček, Tauský, Mahler, Lehár and Kálmán.

Artists taking part will be Patricia Rozario OBE, Mark Troop (accompanist), Marilyn Hill Smith, Linda Watts, Fan Chang Kong, David Martin, Chris Dee, Fraser Goulding, Matthew Farthing, Carol Wells (accompanist), Bromley Youth Music Trust, Bromley Oecumenical Singers and Nigel Douglas (Master of Ceremonies).

Vilém Tauský was the first and, so far only President of the Bromley Oecumenical Singers and was a strong supporter of the Bromley Youth Music Trust. The MC, Nigel Douglas, sang under Vilém’s baton at Sadler’s Wells.

New Home for the Czech Museum of Music in Prague

     The new and permanent home for the Czech Museum of Music is the former Church of St. Magdalene in Prague’s Malá Strana. The address is: Karmelitská 2, Praha 1. The nearest tram stop is Hellichova. The museum is open daily, except Tuesday, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and in addition there is a study room open on Mondays and Fridays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The new home which opened in late November is already attracting a strong following, and in the future there will be a concert hall to serve the public.
